Summary:The Wellington Testimonial [also known as the Wellington Monument] was designed by Sir Robert Smirke, (1780-1867) and is the largest obelisk in Europe, located in the south-east end of the Phoenix Park, Dublin; it was built to commemorate the victories of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington. It was originally planned to be located in Merrion Square however opposition from the residents of the square prevented this. The foundation stone was laid in 1817 but the project ran out of construction funds. The obelisk was finally completed and opened to the public on 18 June 1861.
